Cervical cancer is the one of the most common cancers affecting women.  Fortunately, this is also one of the most easily detectable cancers. Globally, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer.

In most developed societies like ours, regular PAP smear tests can detect the presence of the cancerous cells faster. This can mean quicker commencement of treatment and a faster path to recovery.

The number one cause of cervical cancer is chronic infection of the human papillomavirus or HPV virus that is transmitted through sexual activity. These viral infections may be passed between sexual partners, and the infection can remain for several years in the system without the person even being aware of it.  Other risk factors for cervical cancer include obesity and smoking.

Symptoms of cervical cancer can include abnormal bleeding.  Other symptoms include unusual discharge, urinary incontinence, and pain while urinating.  If you suffer from any of these symptoms, consult your doctor.

If cervical cancer has progressed to the extent that you can no longer work at your job or earn an income, you may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits for your condition. A number of cancers qualify a person for disability benefits, and cervical cancer is no different.

In fact, if the cancer is in the latter stages or is very aggressive, then you may even quality for the Compassionate Allowances program. This is a special program by the Social Security Administration that allows the processing of disability claims to be accelerated, so that the claimant can begin receiving benefits quickly. This can certainly happen in the case of cervical cancer, but the chances of qualifying for Compassionate Allowances or expedited benefits can vary from case to case.
