Vitamin D Deficiency Could Increase Balance Problems in Fibromyalgia Patients

Persons who suffer from fibromyalgia and also have low levels of vitamin D in their bodies could suffer from balance and posture problems.

Those are the findings of a new study published in the journal, Modern Hematology. Patients with fibromyalgia often suffer from an increased risk of falls.  Researchers found in their study that vitamin deficiency is linked to a higher risk of such balance issues in patients.

This is not the first study to show these findings.  Researchers have long believed that lack of vitamin D leads to muscle weakness and deficient mineralization in the bones, which contributes to a high risk of fall accidents. Researchers say that vitamin D deficiency could negatively affect a person’s balance and also the intensity of pain levels that suffer from fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia, also known as fibromyalgia syndrome, is a condition that is characterized by stiffness, pain, numbness in the hands and feet, and tingling sensation in the extremities. These symptoms may also be accompanied by other symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, headaches, fatigue, and insomnia. A person who suffers from fibromyalgia will suffer pain all over his or her body. The pain is typically a dull or sharp, throbbing, or aching. Patients may also suffer from extreme fatigue, even when they have had sufficient sleep. Patients often explain that they feel tired and lethargic, with symptoms that are very similar to those of flu.  Fatigue sets in even when the person wakes up in the morning, or after he or sh has just slept for several hours.

This chronic pain and fatigue very often makes it very difficult for a person to functional in a normal work environment. Even a person who does not do a lot of manual work as part of his or her job may find the mental fatigue and tiredness hard to deal with at work.
