If you are living in a low-income household, with a child suffering from disability, you can potentially receive social security income benefits for your child.
Generally, the following requirements must be met to receive government assistance:
- Your child can’t be working and earning more than $1,130 per month in 2016
- Your child must have physical and/or mental symptoms that severely limit his or her functionality and daily activities, AND
- Your child’s condition must be continuing; it must have been disabling for 12 months or expected to be disabling for at least 12 months, or be expected to result in death
In order to receive social security income for your child, you must complete a Child Disability Report, providing information about your child’s condition and how it reduces his or her ability to function.
Once a child turns 18, the child’s case will be reviewed by the Social Security Income Program using the adult disability rules. Then a new determination will be made as to disability benefits eligibility.
