Am I Eligible for Food Stamps?

| Sep 7, 2016 | Government Benefits

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAPS) is a federally-funded program that assists low-income households with their meals. Anyone is eligible to apply for food stamps. Once you submit your application, in person or through the mail, you will be interviewed by someone from the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS)to properly assess your need for food stamps.

Your request for food stamps will most likely be met in the state of Georgia if you:

  • Have a bank balance (savings and checking combined) of $2,001 or less
  • Have a bank balance (savings and checking combined) of $3,001 or less and share a household with an individual 60+ years of age or with an individual with a disability
  • Have an annual income of $15,301 or less

Once you have been deemed eligible for food stamps, you can receive them through your Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card.

You will be able to purchase food items that fall into the categories of:

  • Breads and cereals
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Meats, fish and poultry
  • Dairy products

Often times, food stamps are one way to help ease the financial burden after an injury or illness that prevents a person from working.
